Muscat: HH Sayyid Theyazin Haitham al Said, Minister of Culture, Sports and Youth, on Sunday presided over the opening of the 2023 Municipal Councils Symposium, organized by the Ministry of Interior.
At the outset of the symposium, Shaikh Dr Shihab Ahmed al Jabri, Adviser to the Minister of Interior for Legal Affairs, Chairman of the symposium’s Organizing Committee, said: “To keep with global technical developments, automate services, integrate data and operations and align activities with the government’s Digital Transition Programme, the Ministry of Interior has introduced a new application codenamed “Tanmia” (or ‘development’), which will be launched today to serve as a link between Omani society and municipal councils in governorates, thereby enabling the councils to spearhead the community’s participation in domestic development.”
Then, HH Sayyid Theyazin launched the Tanmia app, which will operate as the digital interface of municipal councils and enhance transparency and trust among individuals and institutions in a manner that consolidates sustainable development and ameliorates municipal action.
In this context, Ahmed Abdullah al Maamari, Manager of “Tanmia” project at the Ministry of Interior, said that the application, in its first version, conducts municipal councils meetings directly. Users of this application, be they governors or members of municipal councils, can communicate visually with citizens. The app has been made available to members of the public so that they could express their opinions about the services provided through the app.
For his part, HH Sayyid Marwan Turki al Said, Governor of Dhofar, Chairman of the Municipal Council in the governorate, underscored the role undertaken by municipal councils in community communication and empowerment, both when acting as representatives of the governorates or as central bodies in strengthening local administration.
On his turn, Mohammad Suleiman al Kindi, Governor of North Al Batinah, Chairman of the Municipal Council in the governorate, said that the symposium stems from the Royal attention of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik to promote decentralization and confer on municipal councils their real role in development.
Held at Al Bustan Palace Hotel, the symposium also seeks to highlight the importance of integrating the roles of governors and members of municipal councils. It provides an opportunity to exchange experiences and develop future visions for the development of Omani governorates.
