Muscat - The Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology (MTCIT) has announced the completion of the procedures for the first phase of the road dependency transfer project, which consists of transferring the jurisdiction of supervising dirt roads to the municipalities of the governorates of the Sultanate of Oman.
This came during the first meeting of the Steering Committee for the Governance of Road Dependency, headed by Engineer Khamis bin Mohammed al Shamakhi, Undersecretary for Transport, and in the presence of the members of the committee, representatives of the concerned authorities, directors of all municipalities in the governorates.
The meeting discussed the mechanism for activating decentralization in road management and maintenance and activating governance and its implementation for each governorate, which is to support the MTCIT in the technical aspects related to transferring budgets for maintenance contracts and transferring knowledge.
The meeting also discussed that MTCIT is required to assume responsibility for establishing, maintaining, and operating asphalt roads (national, arterial, and secondary) roads. While the governorates will undertake the construction and maintenance of local asphalt roads.
