For many Telugus, 'Komali Sisters' need no introduction. For those who watch stand-up comedy shows on TV, the two sisters are like next-door girls. The elder one Heroshini Komali, who graduated from TV shows to films, believes that talent and hard work pays off in the long run.
Born in Khammam district in Telangana, Heroshini is a multi-talented entertainer, who does dance, mimicry, and anchoring along with her younger sister Devashini Komali. With her sister Devashini, Heroshini did comedy shows like Naa Show Naa Ishtam, and Navvulata among others. Heroshini gained popularity with TV9 show Navvulata... which became a running success.
Heroshini was in Muscat recently as part of a cultural programme organised by Chiru Mega Youth Force (CMYF).
Speaking to the Observer, she said: "I literally fell in love with this place. The city is so beautiful and staying away from the maddening traffic of Hyderabad is a big relief. I have visited many places around the world, and not seen a place as beautiful as Muscat. We visited most of the prominent places in Muscat, and each one has its own charm."
STUDIES FIRST
Though busy with her programmes on TV channels, she never neglected her studies. She pursued her studies and did graduation in Mass Communication and Journalism. She said this gave her a better picture of politics and political satire which helped a lot in doing stand-up comedy shows.
Regarding getting popular as Komali sisters... she said 'Komali' is our family name, and both of us (sisters) became popular with this name. "We both did stand-up comedy for more than five years, and later my sister left for higher studies in the UK, whereas I tried my luck in films."
Heroshini's debut movie was a big budget film in Telugu 'A Aa' (2016) directed by Trivikram. Later in 2019, she made her Kollywood entry in the role of a police officer’s daughter in the movie 'Utraan'.
CAREER IN FILMS
Speaking about her shows off TV, she said: "We did perform at many political meetings, and did shows during political rallies also. Finally, we decided to shift away from politics due to the fear that we will be tied to one party."
Coming to her decision to take a plunge into films, she said we saw the degradation of comedy in TV shows and decided to try in movies. She studied film-making and also did a very powerful role as legendary NTR’s youngest daughter in an NTR biopic.
Later, she did some movies in Tamil also. "The difference between Tamil and Telugu film industry is that in the Tamil industry talent matters... and they don’t care about your popularity. This helped me in getting better roles in Tamil. Now I am playing a lead role in a Telugu film 'Vaikalyam'. The movie deals with a handicapped girl. I hope this film will make an impact on my career."
"As my parents are very strict with our studies, I continued pursuing my Masters in Journalism, and my sister is studying in the UK."
She added: "Having studied film-making, I am more interested in the technical aspects of film-making. As my mother is a fashion designer, she helped us in designing our costumes. It is Chokkapu Venkataramana, who has a cultural association, found talent in us and helped us in finding good roles. As of now, I am looking forward to making more films... but good ones."
