The Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OCCI) hosted the Oman-Austria Business Forum at the W Hotel, Muscat on Wednesday, December 20, 2023, with the participation of business leaders representing a wide cross section of economic sectors.
These sectors included medical education, tourism, water treatment, building and road construction, as well as information technology. The forum, a platform for dialogue and collaboration, aims to strengthen economic ties between Austria and Oman.
Dr Martin Kocher, the Federal Minister of Labour and Economy in Austria, underscored the enduring diplomatic and political relations between the two nations, which have flourished over the course of 50 years.
Dr Kocher detailed discussions focused on fortifying economic cooperation and exploring investment opportunities.
Key areas identified for enhancing economic ties include manufacturing and the burgeoning field of green hydrogen, aligning with Oman's ambitious strategy. Austria, in response to this strategy, has expressed its intention to import green hydrogen in the future.
Tourism emerged as a central theme for collaboration during the forum, with Dr Kocher highlighting the mutual reliance of both countries on this industry.
The envisioned collaboration includes expanding touristic offerings, joint development of destinations, and a commitment to staff training. Dr Kocher emphasized Austria's proven vocational education and training system in tourism and leisure, suggesting its potential as a valuable model for Oman.
The joint effort in training professionals is seen as a promising exercise, underscoring the shared commitment to collaboration and mutual benefit between Austria and Oman.
