Muscat: In a move aimed at safeguarding consumer health and product quality, the Directorate General of Standards and Metrology (DGSM), under the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion (MoCIIP), has clarified conditions and regulations for plastic packaging used in filling and preserving water.
The recently introduced Omani Gulf Standard Specification No OS GSO 2688:2022, titled 'Plastic Packaging Used for Filling and Preserving Water,' prioritises consumer safety while promoting confidence in product quality.
Fatima bint Ali al Saririyah, Head of the Department of Specifications for Chemical and Petroleum Products and Building Materials at DGSM, MoCIIP, highlighted the significance of plastic packaging within standardised specifications to ensure consumer health and safety.
Al Saririyah explained that the widespread use of plastic containers for water preservation led to the adoption of the standard, specifying conditions and testing methods for plastic packaging, including those designed for drinking water.
Providing insight into the production process of plastic materials, she emphasised the importance of clarity in information displayed on containers. Consumers are urged to pay attention to details presented in Arabic or both Arabic and English, strategically placed to discourage easy removal.
Vital information includes product and manufacturer details, country of origin, plastic type, production date, batch number, capacity, suitability for food use, temperature resistance, and any relevant warnings.
This initiative not only reflects a commitment to consumer safety but also underscores the industry's dedication to enhancing the overall quality of plastic packaging, the official said.
As consumers become more discerning, adherence to these standards is expected to fortify trust and confidence in the market for plastic water packaging, she added.
