With Gulf participation, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, represented by the Oman Paralympic Committee (OPC), is set to host the Oman Athletics Meeting for Persons with Disabilities on Friday. The event, organised by the committee, will take place from December 15-16 at the main stadium of the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Bausher.
On Thursday, the technical committee held a meeting with the administrative and technical representatives of Gulf clubs at Al Muruj Hotel. The meeting was attended by Dr Mansoor bin Sultan al Touqi, OPC Chairman, and Dr Tariq al Suwai, technical director of the championship, along with administrative representatives of participating Gulf clubs.
Dr Mansoor al Touqi welcomed the participants from Gulf clubs, emphasising their presence as support to Omani sports and the Oman Athletics Meeting. He expressed the hope for a pleasant stay and success for all the players. Dr Mansoor highlighted that the meeting is internationally recognised by the International Paralympic Committee and praised the organisation's meticulousness, acknowledging the contributions of volunteers and referees.
Dr Tariq al Suwai spoke about the significance of the meeting as part of the international calendar for athletics competitions for persons with disabilities. He thanked the Oman Paralympic Committee for hosting the event and extended gratitude to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth in Oman for its support. Dr Al Suwai also provided details about the competitions, their locations and timings, as well as explaining the international rules for various categories of athletics events.
Day One Competitions
Over 150 athletes representing Oman and Gulf clubs, including Kuwait's Al Tamouh Club, Saudi Arabia's Al Rass Club and Al Madinah Club, UAE's Khorfakkan Club and Al Thiqah Club for Brain and Intellectual Disabilities, are participating in the athletics meeting. Morning competitions include discus, javelin throw, shot put and various running events. In the evening, shot put, long jump, 100m and 400m running events will take place.
The referee training course concluded on Thursday, aiming to equip referees with the skills needed to officiate the Oman Para Athletics. Dr Tariq al Suwai conducted the course with around 30 participants, focusing on the laws and regulations governing athletics competitions for persons with disabilities.
