What rules say on selling medicinal herbs in Oman

Muscat: A retail store was seized for trading and selling herbs with medical claims in the markets of Al Dhahirah Governorate.


According to the Consumer Protection Authority (CPA), the store violated Resolution 254/2015, which regulates the circulation and advertising of natural and processed herbs, plant extracts, and medical devices.


An administrative fine was levied, seizures were confiscated, and a violation was registered against the store.


As per the decision, it is prohibited to trade or advertise any natural or manufactured herbs with medical uses in the form of (pills, capsules, ointments, liquid, or powder) or in any other form, except after obtaining approval from the Ministry of Health.


It is prohibited to trade or advertise any medical devices except after obtaining the approval of the Ministry of Health.


As per the penalties stipulated in the Consumer Protection Law, anyone who violates the provisions of this decision shall be punished with an administrative fine of RO200, and the fine shall be doubled in the event of a repeat violation.


If this violation continues, an administrative fine of RO50 will be imposed for each day that the violation continues, provided that its total does not exceed RO2,000.
