DUBAI: During its participation at the the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28), currently being held in Dubai, the Sultanate of Oman affirmed its support for the efforts taken by the international community to confront global warming and climate change, promote climate action, and shift from the use of fossil fuels to renewable energy sources.
Engineer Salim bin Nasser al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals, met with a number of directors and CEOs of energy firms, on the sidelines of the COP 28. He discussed with them a number of topics related to the firms’ global and local operations in the fields of energy and its techniques as well as the importance of reducing carbon emissions.
Dr Abdullah bin Ali al Amri, Chairman of the Environment Authority (EA), also participated in meetings related to the Jordan Climate and Refugees Connected Initiative. He also held a meeting with Microsoft officials in continuation of the discussion about the Authority’s trend of ‘data-driven environmental decision’ through digital transformation in systems and software related to monitoring, follow-up and governance.
The chairman of the EA explained the Authority’s orientation, scope of work, and the most important objectives. The company’s representatives outlined the work scenario at Microsoft as well as the most important experiences in this field. Similar meetings were held with the Korean side which was attended by the heads of the Omani teams.
During its participation in the COP28, the Sultanate of Oman, at its pavilion, reviewed its plan for achieving zero carbon neutrality by 2050, the establishment of the Oman Sustainability Centre, the launch of the national strategy of the Sultanate of Oman for an orderly transition to zero carbon emission, and the launch of the National Environmental Energy Policy which represents a milestone in the country’s action to combat climate change.
The Sultanate of Oman stressed that its national strategies are based on several main axes in various development sectors in the Sultanate of Oman. These include investing in clean green hydrogen and its use in development sectors especially the industrial and transportation sectors, expanding projects for the production and use of renewable energies particularly solar and wind energy, implementing national campaigns that aim at planting millions of local trees across the Sultanate of Oman, shifting to the use of electricity produced from renewable energies to the maximum possible level, with the aim of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in those development sectors and to contribute to the efforts of the international community to confront global warming and climate change in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement on climate change.
The Sultanate of Oman’s pavilion on Monday held two dialogue sessions in addition and presentations. The first working session was entitled ‘Oman’s Road to Net Zero Emissions: A Blueprint for Sustainable Energy Transformation’. The session highlighted the Sultanate of Oman’s roadmap to net zero emissions as well as the important aspects of its journey towards sustainable energy practices.
