His Highness Sayyid Shihab bin Tarik al Said, Deputy Prime Minister for Defence Affairs inaugurated the Joint International Congress of Ophthalmology and Research at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre.
The four-day congress is organised by the Ophthalmology Center of the Medical City for Military and Security Units, in collaboration with Oman Ophthalmic Society, Ministry of Health, and the Middle East Africa Council of Ophthalmology (MEACO).
The event, “MEACO-MIOC 2023” stands jointly for the 17th International Congress of the Middle East Africa Council of Ophthalmology (MEACO) and the 19th Muscat International Ophthalmology Conference (MIOC 2023).
Being the largest ophthalmology event in the region, the congress is witnessing a vast participation of over 2,000 delegates from across the continents, featuring extensive scientific programme of more than 100 scientific sessions, 26 workshops and courses, over 377 free papers, and 28 wet lab sessions, carried out by more than 500 speakers from 42 countries.
The logo of the International Association for Keratoconus, the distribution of the Ibn Amira Awards and the Ibn Al Dhahabi Gold Medal (Oman), were also part of the opening ceremony besides an exhibition of medical products and modern technologies used in diagnosing and treating various eye diseases.
Additionally, a series of lectures, visual presentations, scholarly papers and workshops, and a range of training courses at the surgical simulation laboratory and a live broadcast of surgical operations conducted by a group of experts and specialists were also part of the first day of the four day conference.
Other activities of the conference include a review of educational experiences in treating eye diseases using a hyperbaric-oxygen chamber and Visumax 800 advanced device. A presentation on making artificial eyes will also be viewed.
The conference seeks to update the participants about the progress made in the field of ophthalmology, exchange expertise and experiences with regional and international participants and to introduce new surgical techniques used in diagnosing and treating eye diseases, as well as methods of conducting relevant research.
Colonel Dr Rashid al Saidi, Chairman of the Congress organising committee delivered a speech followed by a speech by Dr Abdulaziz Badla, President of Middle East Africa Council of Ophthalmology and an address of HRH Prince Abdulaziz Ahmed al Saud.
The Joint International Congress of Ophthalmology and Research gathers some of the world’s most renowned experts, global key opinion leaders in clinical practice as well as leading and emerging scientists who are advancing research in Ophthalmology.
The Congress will also offer unparalleled educational platforms, including for the first time groundbreaking experiences like the hyperbaric chamber and the cutting-edge Visumax 800 Machine.
A series of pre-conference workshops and sessions were started on Wednesday addressing Retina, Ocular Oncology, Standard Practice in Refractive Surgery, in addition to a Glaucoma Didactic Course covering evaluation of the glaucoma patient and trabeculectomy.
The four-day congress’s scientific programme will highlight spectrum of topics in the field including Paediatric Glaucoma Updates, IKS Keratoconus: the diagnostics and corneal crosslinking, women in Ophthalmology: eye health workforce & leadership, and the management of Glaucoma: Guidelines and Skills. A Keynote Lecture on the New Horizon in Glaucoma Research will be carried out, in addition to sessions on Corneal Reshaping, Corneal Inlays and Intracorneal Rings, and Customised Laser Vision Ablation, and lens-based approach.
In addition, numerous challenging conditions will be underlined including Keratitis, Cataract Surgery, and Uveitis, along with addressing electrophysiology of vision, patient with double vision, and dedicated courses for Ophthalmic Ultrasound, Ophthalmic Nursing, Allied Ophthalmic Professionals. The program will also introduce Ophthalmology in Arabic.
Joint International Congress is seeking to introduce participants to new ophthalmology, exchanging expertise and experiences with regional and international participants, learning about new surgical techniques used in diagnosing and treating eye diseases, as well introduce best methods in conducting scientific research.
