Muscat: In a significant step towards a sustainable and low-carbon future, Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) today launched an extended pilot project dedicated to utilizing CO2 for Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) in northern Oman. This initiative represents a first for both PDO and the Sultanate of Oman, marking a crucial milestone in the country's journey towards environmental sustainability and carbon neutrality.

PDO's commitment to building a sustainable, low-carbon future is at the forefront of this project. The company aims to ensure its long-term success by generating significant oil and gas revenue in a cost-effective and carbon-efficient manner. This aligns with Oman's Vision 2040 and PDO's goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. The pilot project will de-risk and expedite full-field EOR development, with a three-month continuous CO2 injectivity phase, followed by a long-term injection lasting up to a year. The strategic approach is designed to unlock substantial oil volumes trapped in the subsurface, leading to a major sustainable CO2 EOR project within the PDO concession area.

Salim Al Aufi, the Minister of Energy and Minerals, highlighted Oman's commitment to net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, noting that Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) is a key enabler in the national decarbonization roadmap. He praised the PDO pilot as a concrete example of Oman's dedication to boosting production while decarbonizing operations.

Steve Phimister, PDO's Managing Director, expressed pride in this technological and environmental achievement. He emphasized PDO's commitment to growing its core oil and gas business safely, efficiently, and sustainably, while minimizing emissions. This project underscores PDO's role in driving Oman towards a cleaner, more environmentally conscious future, balancing economic growth with ecological responsibility.
