Muscat: In a combined effort of number of health institutions, the Directorate General of Health Services in Muscat Governorate in cooperation with the Health and Administrative Supervision Office organised a diabetes awareness event called 'Access to diabetes care' at Muscat Mall. The event touched on the topics that revolves around diabetes, its symptoms, causes, treatment plan, and prevention.

Due the increasing cases of diabetes in the Sultanate of Oman, the event aimed at raising awareness among the community and to motivate commitment to regular screening to detect diabetes for its seriousness and its impact on individuals, given that it accompanies the patient throughout his life.

Dr Hassan Abdullah, an expert in diabetes, stated that the main causes for increased cases of patients of diabetes is the changes in life styles, obesity, lack of adequate exercise, in addition to other factors like hereditary factors.

The main dangerous complications is the effect of the disease on all body organs causing damages to nervous system, kidneys, heart and vascular system. "There are many patients suffering from vascular problems which lead to amputation of parts of there limbs Unfortunately the community still not aware about the because. We see increasing cases of obesity which is one of main causes," Dr Hassan said.

Huda al Kiyoumi, a Nutrition Specialist added that diabetic patients are cared for in health centres in particular in a section called 'Check and Reassure' due to the lack of clarity of symptoms among patients. "They are then directed and given health advice to follow a treatment plan using oral medication or injections according to specific doses. Follow a specific nutritional plan and exercise plan to relieve symptoms and control the disease," she said.

In psychological standpoint, Nawal al Haddabi, health education official at the exhibition said, "It is also important to devote attention to psychological care in addition to therapeutic care for patients to help them accept treatment and understand the stage of their disease in order to avoid worsening symptoms, avoid harm, and motivate them to seek treatment."
