Oman reaffirms Palestinians’ right to self-determination

NEW YORK: In its address delivered at the United Nations General Assembly meeting to discuss the International Court of Justice’s report, the Sultanate of Oman commended the pivotal and significant role played by the ICJ in promoting peaceful settlement to disputes in accordance with the provisions and principles of the United Nations Charter.


Second Secretary Mohammed bin Ali al Shuhi, member of the permanent delegation of the Sultanate of Oman to the United Nations, delivered the Sultanate of Oman’s address in which it affirmed its commitment to the United Nations principles and the United Nations Charter which stipulates respect for international laws, non-interference in the internal affairs of countries, and the settling of disputes between countries by peaceful means, preventing use or threatened use of force, supporting cooperation between countries and enhancing opportunities for dialogue among them.


The Sultanate of Oman affirmed its stance supportive of the ICJ contributions aimed at adhering to the provisions of international law and the established principles of the United Nations Charter, and its role in reinforcing the relationship between the various United Nations bodies particularly the International Court of Justice, the UN’s main judicial body.


In his speech, Al Shuhi explained that the Sultanate of Oman reiterates its firm attitude on the importance of peaceful settlement of disputes and preventing use or threatened use of force as set forth by the United Nations Charter and its principles.


The Sultanate of Oman endorsed the United Nations General Assembly Resolution No 247/77 dated on December 30, 2022, in which the General Assembly, in accordance with Article 96 of the United Nations Charter, requested the International Court of Justice to issue an advisory opinion on the legal consequences arising from Israel’s continued violation of the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and also with regard to its long-term occupation, settlement construction and annexation of the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, and on the impact of the Israeli policies and practices on the legal status of the occupation and the legal implications resulting from this status for all countries and the United Nations.


The Government of the Sultanate of Oman submitted its written argument before the International Court of Justice in The Hague, pursuant to United Nations General Assembly Resolution No 247/77 requesting the International Court of Justice to issue an advisory opinion on the consequences of Israel’s continued violations of the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination, confirming the solid stance of the Sultanate of Oman backing the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital. — ONA
