MUSCAT : In a recent speech, Eng Said bin Hamoud al Maawali, Oman’s Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, highlighted the importance of international trends and their potential impact on Oman’s logistics sector.
Speaking to an attentive audience at the Modern College of Business and Science (MCBS), the minister emphasised the need for students and young professionals to be aware of these trends in order to seize the opportunities they present.
With a keen eye on technological advancements, Al Maawali articulated the impact of rapid developments in technology and its effect on job markets. He stressed that the changing technological landscape will create new jobs, while also making certain jobs more important than others.
The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) and the development of new mobility technologies like flying taxis were cited as examples. The minister urged students to prepare themselves for these changes and ensure that Oman benefits from the gains brought about by these advancements.
Moreover, the minister highlighted the shifting balance of global economic power from west to east. He emphasised the need to closely monitor emerging economies such as China, India, Mexico, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Bangladesh. With their large populations, these countries are expected to play significant roles in future economic trends.
The minister encouraged young Omanis to seek opportunities and collaborations with these nations to drive economic growth and development.
He also addressed the importance of identifying Oman’s unique strengths and finding a clear mission for the country.
He stressed the significance of the logistics sector and its potential to contribute to Oman’s economy. He said that the sector already contributed approximately RO 2 billion to the GDP in the previous year, but emphasised the possibility of achieving even greater success.
One of the main focuses mentioned by the minister was the optimisation of Oman’s ports, airports, and road connections.
He said, “The aim is to ensure seamless cooperation between these key transportation hubs and foster stronger linkages.” The minister also highlighted the need to explore new opportunities in the import-export market, especially in regards to fresh produce and commodities.
By leveraging Oman’s favourable geographic location and by developing strong partnerships with neighbouring countries like Pakistan, India, and the UAE, Oman can position itself as a central hub for logistics and trade in the region.
The minister also touched upon the importance of fostering entrepreneurship and innovation in the logistics sector.
He noted successful initiatives, such as the support given to start-ups in the metalworks industry, which have led to significant job creation and helped diversify Oman’s economy.
Additionally, the minister highlighted the government’s focus on developing IT skills, with a particular emphasis on areas like AI, big data, and cybersecurity, which he believes will be crucial for future job growth.
In addition to academic prowess, Al Maawali urged students to focus on sharpening vital social skills and cultivating adaptability.
Recognising the highly competitive nature of the job market, he encouraged students to distinguish themselves as exceptional candidates by going beyond what is expected and seizing opportunities for personal and professional growth.
Building robust professional networks was also emphasised as a key factor in advancing career prospects while cautioning against the misuse of connections.
The minister underscored Oman’s unwavering commitment to positioning itself as a prominent player in the ever-evolving logistics sector. By vigilantly monitoring global and regional trends, Oman aims to capitalise on emerging opportunities and align its logistics industry with the changing needs of global trade.
