Shura Polls: 64% of winners will be first-time members

Muscat: The Main Committee of the Majlis A' Shura Council’s 10th Term Elections convened on Monday a press conference to review the electoral process that held to elect members for the tenth term of the Majlis A' Shura on Sunday.


According to the committee, voting went successfully via the Intakhib application, noting that 64 percent of the winners elected on Sunday are new faces while the percentage improved to over 65 percent.


Speaking about gender-based participation, men constituted 52 percent of the voting process, while women 48 percent.


“There was an increase in the voting percentage, and in some wilayats, it was more than 95 percent,” the members confirmed.

Meanwhile, the number of female voters in Dhofar Governorate was 35,000.


The members highlighted the first-of-its-kind- Intakhib application, noting that it has reduced the costs involved in the election process.

Regarding the zero-membership of women in the upcoming term, the members said, "If women did not win this session, it would not diminish their status and role, as we have ministers, undersecretaries, ambassadors, and directors, who have made contributions in the fields of development, competing with men in all forums."


As per the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI), over 1, 500,000 citizens have the right to vote, of which 753,000 voters registered, constituting 50 percent. Registration for voting is voluntary in Oman.
