MUSCAT: Entries close on October 31, for the Digital Prosperity Awards – an international initiative launched by the Digital Cooperation Organization (DCO), a global multilateral organization that aims to enable digital prosperity for all by accelerating the inclusive growth of the digital economy.

The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MTCIT), is a member and founding state of the Riyadh-based Digital Cooperation Organization. Just this year, Oman was also selected as a member of the DCO’s Executive Committee.

The Digital Prosperity Awards, launched in August, aim to acknowledge outstanding digital contributions that drive progress and prosperity, with a particular focus on advancing the digital economy, a pivotal catalyst for sustainable growth on a global scale. Entries are invited from the public sector, private sector, and civil society organizations from all over the world.

According to a key official of the Ministry, initiatives such as the Digital Prosperity Awards (www.DigitalProsperityAwards.com) will help enhance Oman’s digital economy.

“We aim for Oman to be a top 20 Global Innovation country by 2040, a top 10 country in the Global Competitive Index, and a global tech and SME hub. Key to achieving this will be to empower and unlock the potential of our digital native youth,” said Dr Nasser bin Mohammed al Fannah, Director of the Technical Programs Office at the Ministry.

“For us, in Oman, showing our young population that a career in technology can be for them – and that in following such a career, they can help their country grow – is critical. Awards such as the Digital Prosperity Awards recognise the initiatives already in place and help people imagine that these kinds of successes can also be theirs, to share and enjoy,” he further stated.

Through its active membership of the DCO, Oman hopes to achieve its digital economy goals, according to Dr Al Fannah.

“We aim to consult and work with other member states, especially in devising new policies and laws that boost the digital economy. We are working with DCO on several projects, such as data governance, the calculation of digital taxes, and helping SMEs in the ICT field expand, in addition to developing an indicator to measure the maturity of the digital economy.

Meeting the challenges of climate change, water scarcity, youth unemployment and virtually all other societal and economic factors demand digital solutions and greater cooperation with other countries in a globalized digital world,” he added.
