An exciting cultural celebration, Al Din International Festival 2023, has started with its theme, 'Gathering the World in Oman'.
The Al Din Theatre of Culture and Art is hosting the biennial event, which brings together theatres from across the Arab world. This year's special edition, however, aims to unite theatres from around the globe, focusing on Omani culture, tourism in Oman, and a deeper understanding of theatre as a means of communication. The festival is scheduled to run from October 22 to 31 and is held in collaboration with the Oman Automobile Association.
The festival features diverse performances divided into three main categories: Children, Adults, and Street. In the Children category, the Al Din Theatre of Art and Culture presents "Jamil's Fingers," while theatres from Iran, Jordan, Kuwait, Kazakhstan, and Oman offer a variety of enchanting shows. The Adult category includes "Night of Assassins" from Egypt and compelling performances from Iran, Spain, Iraq, Syria, and Kuwait. The Street category features engaging street theatre performances from Oman, the UAE, Iraq, and Oman, providing unique outdoor entertainment for the audience.
In addition to these captivating performances, the festival offers workshops and discussion panels covering various topics for different societal groups. Esteemed Arab artists, such as Mustafa Al Khani, explore the mastery of the actor's senses. Othman Al-Shatti, a Kuwaiti writer, discusses narrative theatre and theatrical play. The festival also hosts an intellectual symposium on "Street Theatre: Insights and Theories" with valuable insights from experts like Idris Al-Nabhani, Dr Bashar Aliwi, Cal Smith, and Lomakin Vladimir, who share their experiences and knowledge of street theatre from around the world.
Al-Din Theatre for Art and Culture, established in 1994 with just five members, has grown to include over a hundred members from across Oman. Their mission is to modernize Omani theatre and showcase Omani culture by participating in various theatre festivals within and outside Oman, making significant contributions to the world of theatre and cultural exchange.
