MUSCAT: The Oman Racket Sports Committee (ORSC) marked World Squash Day which falls on second on Saturday of October every year. The ORSC arranged series of activities at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Muscat and at the Sohar Sports Complex in North Batinah governorate. The activities took place during October 14 to 17.
The main event took place on Saturday at the squash hall in Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in presence of Dr AbdulRahim Musallam al Droushi, Chairman of ORSC, in presence of squash lovers.
The event featured a friendly match and later they honoured the winners of Muscat Squash League which was held during the couple months ago. The chief of ORSC delivered the prizes and trophies to the top winners of the league including Rashid Ali who won the premier league for June while Joseph Fighali for the first division league. Hussain Ahmed claimed the title of July in premier league while Tahir al Barwani for first division league. Salim al Maqbali was crowned champion for August while Said al Hajri won the first division league title.
Earlier on Sunday, Muscat school students performed basic training sessions under supervision of Sultan Qaboos University students representing the Physical Education and Sport Sciences Department. The students were briefed about the rules of squash sports, showed some technical skills and how to play and earn points in this sport.
On Monday and Tuesday, the ORSC organised some activities for the students in Suhar under supervision of coach Hamed al Maqbali and in presence of coaches Ali al Rubaei and Abdullah al Maqbali who guided and instructed the players with the desired techniques and different technical training sessions besides holding a competitive tournament.
Dr AbdulRahim Musallam al Droushi, Chairman of ORSC, said the committee organised these activities on the World Squash Day to introduce and spread the sports to different age categories in the community. “School students were our main focus to develop their technical and tactical areas. During the forthcoming period, ORSC will arrange some events to opt the most proper players and provide detailed and comprehensive plans for them to develop well,” he concluded.
Tahir bin Taghlib al Barawani, Secretary-General of ORSC, affirmed that the participation of students for the World Squash Day showed a positive message to us. “We were surprised with their enthusiasm for the sport. This is a positive indicator to work hard in developing these junior stars for the future. Shortly, there will be a competition to select the players and form the junior national teams,” he said.
Amal al Mahrouqi, member at OQSC, said the activities of World Squash Day focused on attracting school students from both genders. “The students are the future of the sports and will be the main nucleus to form the national junior teams. The committee will work hard to raise the number of participants in squash by holding specialised different events for young players. Later, will work technically to select the talented players and refine them ahead of providing them with proper training programme,” she said.
