Omani women have emerged as influential leaders in the public and private sectors, actively participating in the Sultanate of Oman’s comprehensive development through the Majlis Ash’shura platform. The laws in Oman grant women the right to run and vote without any gender-based restrictions, reflecting the commitment to gender equality.
Omani women have been actively involved in the Majlis Ash’shura since its inception in 1994, starting with Muscat Governorate as the pioneering experiment and later expanding to all governorates. During this period, two women secured seats in the Majlis Ash’shura, marking a significant milestone in women’s participation in the political landscape.
The statistics reveal that Omani women have excelled in various fields, constituting over 33 per cent of the total workforce in the public and private sectors. Their active role in shaping Oman’s future and contributing to its progress has positioned them as scientific and practical leaders.
His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik has emphasised the pivotal role of women in shaping the nation’s present and future, acknowledging their fundamental role in national development.
The ninth period of the Majlis Ash’shura elections (2019-2023) witnessed a notable increase in the number of woman candidates, highlighting the success of Omani women in their roles within the Shura process. The election law for the Majlis Ash’shura, as outlined in Royal Decree No. 58/2013, guarantees the political rights of Omani women, aligning with the Basic Law of the State.
The Ministry of Interior ensures the transparency of the electoral process and promotes the expansion of Omani women’s participation in the Majlis Ash’shura. Omani women have not only worked within government agencies but have also played vital roles in civil sectors and private sector companies, underscoring their significance in the nation’s development.
The Majlis Ash’shura serves as a platform through which Omani women contribute to society, showcasing their diverse capabilities. This reflects a mature, aware, and responsible society that recognises the importance of women’s voices in shaping the nation.
Dr Mohammed bin Khalfan al Asimi, Deputy Assistant Secretary-General for Sessions Affairs of the Majlis Ash’shura, has acknowledged the empowered status of women within the Majlis Ash’shura. Women have actively participated in addressing national issues, with a particular focus on women’s concerns. Although women’s representation in the Majlis may not be high, it signifies their ability to compete and secure seats through free elections.
Sumaya al Balushi, a member of the media team for the Majlis Ash’shura member elections for the tenth term, emphasises the importance of women believing in their role in the Majlis Ash’shura. She underscores the need for women to be part of nation building, turning the slogan that they are “half of society” into a tangible reality. Families and society at large should support and enable women to achieve their rightful positions.
