Muscat: The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources in Oman has taken a significant step in fisheries management by organising a comprehensive national event.
This collaborative event brought together an array of experts, researchers from governmental and private institutions, academic scholars, and representatives from fisheries-related associations.
The event aimed to spotlight the rich diversity of Ray fish (Batoids) species indigenous to Omani waters and emphasise the crucial need to preserve and conserve this valuable marine resource.
Prior to this pivotal event, the ministry had embarked on a crucial research endeavour spearheaded by the Marine and Fisheries Sciences Centre. This ambitious study commenced on March 20, 2022, and is set to conclude on March 19, 2024. The geographical focus of this research spans the coastal governorates of Oman, explicitly targeting the Drop-off locations and local markets.
The core beneficiaries of this project encompass a broad spectrum of stakeholders, including fishermen, traders engaged in Ray fish fisheries, and businesses connected to this industry. Among the expected outcomes of this comprehensive study is the compilation of an exhaustive list of Ray fish species inhabiting Omani waters.
Equally important is evaluating these species based on local and international sustainability benchmarks, with a keen eye on factors such as endangerment and depletion.
Moreover, this research initiative is poised to delve into the status of commercial Ray fish fisheries, meticulously examining their temporal and spatial distribution, identifying patterns, and assessing relative abundance.
An essential aspect of the study involves scrutinising the composition of the Ray fish market and, equally significant, documenting the post-harvest activities and the diverse array of products derived from Ray fish.
This comprehensive study aims to serve as a cornerstone for future initiatives and policies aimed at the responsible management and sustainable exploitation of Ray fish resources in Oman.
It opens the door to potential collaborations and partnerships with the private sector, paving the way for environmentally sound and economically viable approaches to Ray fish product utilisation. Ultimately, the ministry's proactive efforts in this domain promise to safeguard both the ecological balance of Omani waters and the livelihoods of those dependent on this precious marine resource.
