The government has launched a pioneering national marriage counselling programme, aptly named “Tamask,” an Arabic word translating to ‘cohesion’.

This programme is tailored to empower couples with the requisite expertise and insight to forge enduring and robust relationships. Tamask will be offered to government employees and their respective spouses residing in the Dhofar Governorate. It spans a comprehensive four-day curriculum, with each day accommodating a distinct set of couples.

The curriculum of Tamask encompasses a diverse spectrum of key subjects, encompassing: Clarification of spousal rights and responsibilities; Ethical underpinnings in marital life; Focusing on the disparities in the needs of men and women; Enhancement of emotional fulfilment competencies; Highlighting the importance of communication and dialogue; Delving into common sources of spousal discord; Stress mitigation techniques, and Conflict resolution. Steering this programme are two accredited trainers — Khalid bin Ahmed Tabook, Head of the Family Guidance and Counselling Department, and Laila bint Said bin Mohammed al Maashaniyah, a specialist in Family Guidance and Counselling.

Tamask plans to target an estimated 150 couples during its inaugural year, with plans to expand its reach to cover other governorates in the near future. This initiative stands as a testament to the government’s commitment to fortify familial bonds and cultivate societal unity.

It is anticipated that Tamask will contribute appreciably towards diminishing divorce rates and elevating the well-being of Omani couples. The inaugural session, set to open on Monday at Sultan Qaboos Youth Complex for Culture and Entertainment, is targeted at newly married couples or those preparing to tie the knot in the near future. During the four-day programme, participants will be encouraged to positively shape their attitudes towards their partners, and develop their skills, knowledge, and culture in order to build a safe and secure family with a high level of responsibility.
