Muscat: Two dedicated teachers from the Ministry of Education have made remarkable strides in making English language learning both enjoyable and accessible for students.

Shamsa Al Kasbi and Muna Al Rawahi of Al Mabeela South Post Basic School began their journey with ‘Let’s Read,’ which has now reached its third edition and has become a best-seller.

Following this success, they went on to develop ‘Play with Grammar,’ ‘Around Oman,’ and more, amassing a portfolio of about 10 books.

Shamsa and Muna initially started with grammar games for beginners and intermediate learners.

“The materials are designed for beginners and struggling readers; even parents can use them to start learning,” they say.

With 15 years of teaching experience, the duo have authored a comprehensive series of books on Oman.

Their project is aptly named ‘Rawd’ (Instagram @Rawd.Learn), signifying “An area where beautiful green grass and wildflowers grow.”

The inception of their project dates back to 2017 when Muna introduced an interactive grammar game called ‘Play with Grammar.’

With two levels for beginners and intermediates, this game made its debut at the Muscat International Book Fair and received widespread acclaim. The game consists of cards with exam-like questions, motivational cards, and answer keys, providing students with a playful yet effective way to grasp grammatical concepts.

In 2020, ‘Let’s Read!’ was born. Their books garnered attention at exhibitions in Oman and the GCC region, primarily due to their colorful, phonics-focused approach that made English more accessible to children.

Shamsa explains, “The aim of the book is to enable children to learn how to read in an enjoyable way. It includes all English letter sounds, followed by words for each individual sound. Each group of sounds is supported by an inspiring short story in English.”

Muna adds that ‘Let’s Read!’ includes codes for audio recordings, word lists, and stories, making it an invaluable resource for both teachers and parents.

The accompanying workbook for ‘Let’s Read!’ is designed to reinforce letter sound teachings and features various activities, including audio exercises to enhance students’ reading skills.

With a focus on one sight word and one phonic sound, the teachers developed ‘Phonics Stories,’ a series of three books, each containing over eight stories. Every story is followed by comprehension questions that encourage students to recall information directly from the text, gradually advancing from easy to challenging questions.

‘Around Oman’ aims is to provide children with basic knowledge about Muscat, Nizwa, Salalah, Suhar, and Sur. Two central characters, Sama and Sami, guide readers through each city, introducing its captivating landscapes, attractions, and historical sites. The popularity of this book eventually led to the creation of animated videos.

Dr Suad Al Wahaibi from Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) has meticulously edited and recorded all the publications.

Today, all their educational materials are accessible online and through social media platforms.

In the future, Shamsa and Muna aim to distribute their books across the GCC region while continuously working on materials that cater to students’ evolving needs and interests.

In May 2023, the teachers participated in an English forum titled ‘Determination Determines Your Destination,’ organised by R S Aseela Al Masroori.

The event introduced their publications to representatives from the Ministry of Education, further extending the reach and impact of their work.

Through their unwavering commitment and innovative approach, Shamsa and Muna have not only transformed English language education in Oman but have also paved the way for a brighter future for countless students, parents, and educators alike. Their journey continues, with a firm resolve to make quality education accessible to all.
