Muscat: Residents of the capital, particularly those from the suburb of Al Amerat, have had a sigh of relief since Tuesday as the Muscat Municipality in cooperation with the Royal Oman Police (ROP) opened two lanes of the Moutain Road towards Bausher from 5 am to 9 am.
The decision has helped to ease vehicular congestion on the Amerat-Wadi Adei road and the subsequent spillover effect on the Sultan Qaboos Steet starting from Darsait to Al Sarooj in Qurum.
It may be noted vehicle movement in the morning peak hours was reduced to a snail's pace since the authorities imposed movement restrictions on the Amerat-Bausher road, with many motorists telling the Observer that they had to homes at least an hour daily to reach offices on time.
One road in the capital that has remained dangerous over the years is the Al Amerat-Bausher mountain road, which needs efficient and different levels of safety measures.
As part of the road maintenance work, Muscat Municipality announced the closure of the road towards Bausher from Al Amerat for four months.
According to figures, a number of accidents have occurred on this road, taking the lives of some people and injuring many others.
With this in mind, commuters have been calling for a permanent solution, especially building a tunnel to link the two areas parts of the capital.
The property boom in Al Amerat, which coincided with the development of roads cutting through mountains, forced many citizens and residents to shift their homes to Al Amerat, where bigger flats are available for relatively cheap rentals.
To cater to the needs of the local population, several restaurants, hypermarkets, and store chains have opened their branches in the vicinity.
