The International Day of Non-Violence, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi was celebrated on October 2nd, organised by Rajya Yoga Center in association with the Indian Embassy in Oman.

The theme of the event was, "Igniting the light of goodness for Global Peace."

The Ambassador of India, Amit Narang, said that Gandhi's teachings are universal in nature, applicable across time, geographies and cultures. It is no surprise therefore that his ideals inspired the work of revolutionaries the world over, from Nelson Mandela in Africa to Martin Luther King Jr in the US.

"It is true without doubt that peace is not possible in the absence of peace within. Communal harmony follows the harmony of the heart. Universal brotherhood is achievable only with globalism alive in the deep recesses of human mind. Gandhi's story is but an example of how a wider perspective and universal humanism is essential to inculcate the spirit of global thinking," he said.

The chief guest of the program, HH Sayyidah Basma Al Said, said," Gandhi for me is someone I have read a lot about ND watched documentaries about and I was curious about what makes personalities such as Gandhi to carry on even with such hardships. I was impressed about his calmness and the lines on his face show what he has done for the world. You look at his face and you can see the peace. "

The programme began with the candle lighting by the dignitaries including the ambassadors of Nepal, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Republic of Korea.

In her speech, Maureen Goodman, program director, Brahma Kumari, UK spoke about identity. The identity of gender, culture and ethnicity is about being told who we are.

"Sach set of identity has a set of responses,” she said.
