Muscat: The Environment Authority announced the launch of the 'Green Madha' initiative, a project aimed at enhancing the environmental aspects of the Wilayat of Madha. This initiative capitalises on the region's unique natural components, distinctive demographic characteristics, and abundant green cover.
The Wilayat of Madha is renowned for its pristine environment, distanced from industrial projects and pollution sources. The 'Green Madha' initiative has been conceived to bolster the values of environmental sustainability, protect and nurture the region's vegetative cover, monitor air quality, and integrate circular economy principles into the local ecosystem. Furthermore, it aims to revamp waste management, improve environmental cleanliness, and bolster environmental services.
The initiative's official launch took place at the Madha Club under the auspices of Dr Abdullah bin Ali bin Abdullah al Amri, Chairman of the Environment Authority.
The event witnessed the active participation of various government bodies, the private sector, the local community, and citizens.
Key highlights of the ceremony included presentations of several environmental projects. These projects encompassed planting an impressive 30,000 trees within the Wilayat of Madha and sowing a million seeds in the current year.
Notably, there was a project unveiled for the creation of a model village for livestock breeders, initiatives for controlling gas-emitting plants, the restoration of 18 affected aflaj (traditional irrigation channels) due to climatic conditions, a solar power generation project, an advanced municipal waste management and green waste collection programme, and the introduction of modern irrigation systems for green areas.
In his address, Dr Al Amri emphasised the primary objective of the "Green Madha Initiative" – to achieve environmental sustainability within the wilayat. This will be accomplished through various environmental projects across sectors. These projects include enhancing, rehabilitating, and developing vegetative and arboreal cover for wildlife.
Moreover, initiatives within the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources will expand the dam system, optimise natural water resource utilisation, promote green waste recycling, and eliminate gas-emitting tree species. Other projects, presented by Nama Group, the Authority for Public Services Regulation, and Municipal Initiatives in Madha, underscore the collective responsibility for environmental preservation.
Shaikh Dr Hamad bin Saeed al Maamari, Wali of Madha, underscored the significance of the "Green Madha Initiative." This initiative assumes vital importance given Madha's lush vegetation and pollution-free environment. It promises to enhance these attributes, promote environmental sustainability, and align with the goals of Oman Vision 2040.
In the private sector's involvement in the initiative's launch, Mohammed bin Ali al Shihi from Nama Company for Electricity Generation presented insights on clean energy in Madha. Mohammed bin Abdullah al Madhani from the Omani Holding Company for Environmental Services (be'ah) outlined a proposed action plan for municipal waste management in the Wilayat of Madha.
