MUSCAT: The Fisheries Control Team of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources in South Al Sharqiyah Governorate has announced the seizure of three fishing vessels operating in waters off-limits to fishing in the Masirah Sea.
The seizures, announced on September 8, 2023, were in line with the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to enforce compliance with fishing regulations and maritime laws.
The three fishing vessels operate in restricted areas, all situated within a three-mile radius of Masirah Island's shoreline. In strict adherence to maritime regulations, the team impounded the vessels and also confiscated the fish caught unlawfully in these prohibited zones.
An expatriate worker found engaged in fishing activities without the required license was detained as well, the Ministry said in a post. Legal proceedings are currently in progress to address this violation, it stated.
The Fisheries Control Team reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to preserving the integrity of fishing regulations, prominently showcased in South Al Sharqiyah Governorate. By swiftly responding to violations and enforcing maritime laws, they not only protect the sustainability of marine resources but also ensure a fair and compliant fishing industry, it noted.
