MUSCAT: The outlook for ‘Future Mobility’ in the Sultanate of Oman will be among a number of sustainability themes that will be showcased at the Oman Sustainability Week (OSW 2024), set to take place at Oman Convention & Exhibition Center from April 29 to May 1, 2024.
Organised by Connect with the support of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MTCIT) as well as Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), the ‘Future Mobility’ expo will focus on the theme, ‘Sustainable Living in a Circular Society’.
“OSW Future Mobility is the newest event to be held as part of Oman Sustainability Week that aims to become Oman's most comprehensive future mobility platform, showcasing the latest concepts, solutions, technologies, and innovations in future clean mobility,” said the organisers in an introduction to the event.
“From the rise of ride-sharing services to the development of autonomous vehicles, the way we get from point A to point B is evolving rapidly. Technologies such as blockchain, Internet of Things (IoT), 5G, and artificial intelligence (AI) are also playing a major role in the changing landscape of mobility,” they further noted.
The event will build on a series of landmark initiatives announced by the Omani government in support of its commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. The Ministry of Transport has, rolled out a programme of incentives and measures to help reduce carbon emissions in the transportation, communications, and information technology sectors, which together account for nearly 20 percent of the Sultanate of Oman's overall carbon emissions.
The ministry’s phased strategy for achieving zero carbon neutrality is as follows: First stage - reducing emissions by three percent by 2030); Second - reducing emissions by 34 percent by 2040; and Third - reducing emissions by 100 percent by 2050.
Also as part of the first stage targets, at least 35% of all new light vehicles in Oman will be electric, rising to 65 per cent by 2040 and 100 per cent by 2050.
