MUSCAT: Thailand romped to their second win with an 8-1 thumping of Malaysia in an Elite group clash of the Women’s Asia Cup Hockey5s 2023 in Salalah on Saturday.
The Thai women had posted a 5-1 win against Japan on Friday in their opening match of the tournament, which acts as the qualifiers for the first ever Hockey5s World Cup to be hosted by Muscat in January 2024.
At the Sultan Qaboos Youth Complex hockey turf in Salalah, the result handed Malaysia their second straight defeat after a 7-2 loss against India on Friday.
For Thailand, Natthakarn Aunjai, Sudarat Noo-keaw and Kornkanok Sanpoung scored two goals each. Kunjira Inpa and Anongnat Piresram also found targets for Thailand.
Zafirah Aziz netted the lone goal for Malaysia.
Thailand moved top of the Elite group with six points from two matches.
India are second with three points from their opening win over Malaysia.
In a later match, India take on Japan in their second match.
Japan are third and Malaysia are last in the group with no points.
OMAN SUFFER DEFEATS
Hosts Oman suffered their fourth straight defeat in the Challenger group when they went down 9-2 against Bangladesh on Saturday.
Though the Omani women's hockey5s team showed improved performance compared to the opening 16-0 drubbing of Hong Kong, it was not enough.
On Friday, Oman lost to Indonesia 6-2 in their second match.
In an earlier match on Saturday, Chinese Taipei thrashed Oman 11-1.
In other matches of the Challenger group, Hong Kong beat Indonesia 5-3 and later edged out Chinese Taipei 8-6 to top the group with 12 points from four matches.
Bangladesh smashed Iran 9-3 and thumped Oman 9-2 to take second spot with nine points from four matches.
Indonesia are third in the group with nine points but less goal average compared to Bangladesh.
Indonesia thrashed Iran 10-3 to earn vital three points.
Chinese Taipei are fourth with six points. Iran are fifth and Oman are last with no points.
