MUSCAT: Oman under-16 football team concluded their third warm-up camp in Muscat on Saturday after eight days of training sessions and several local friendly matches.
The main goals of these short camps were reformation of the team and finalising the squad ahead of the forthcoming key events. The closest assignment for Oman junior boys will be taking part in the Arab School Football Championship in Egypt in November.
Oman team will attend this key event under an umbrella of Oman Schools Sports Association (OSSA) as this championship is dedicated for the schools. The following participation for the team will be in the West Asian Championship in December.
The eight-day preparatory gathering featured two warm-up domestic matches. In the last match for the U16 team, they suffered a 5-0 loss against Seeb under-19 team on Friday. The Oman boys beat Fanja under-19 team 2-0 recently and Oman’s goals were scored by Ahmed al Jabri. During the previous camps, the Oman team went down 3-1 against Samayil club under-19 team. The Oman U16 boys registered their first win in the recent short camps against Muscat club U19 team by 2-0.
Despite the difference in the results of the friendly matches, Anwar al Habsi, head coach of the national team, noted all the technical points relevant to the player’s individual performance and their weak areas. It is expected the team will continue their preparatory programme ahead of their Arab assignment in Cairo city and the upcoming camps will shape their readiness.
The first camp for the side took place between July 24 to 30 in Bidiya with participation of 50 players and they were filtered to 26 players in the following short camp which took place from August 5 to 14.
Many of the players who entered the team were from the Omantel League for Schools as Oman School Sports Association (OSSA) had concluded the tournament a few months ago. The league featured attendance of all the education directorates across the Sultanate of Oman. The national team coaching staff were monitoring this event and some names in the national team squad were selected from the tournament.
