MUSCAT: In preparation for the forthcoming academic year, a large number of parents are expressing concern over the escalating cost of school supplies. The financial strain falls particularly on household breadwinners, whose monthly earnings might not align with the demands imposed by educational institutions.
Addressing these concerns, the Consumer Protection Authority (CPA) has intensified its campaign on establishments selling textiles, footwear, and school essentials across various governorates. This initiative is timed to coincide with the back-to-school season. The authority's inspection teams ensure availability of all school supplies, and scrutinise price conformity.
Emphasing proactive measures, the authority underscores the significance of early procurement of school necessities for children. Doing so allows parents to compare options, and make reasonable choices before the academic year commences.
Following the conclusion of vacation and the absence of funds earmarked for the school season, some individuals have deferred financial planning. Consequently, establishments dealing in school supplies are witnessing a surge in activity, often accompanied by grievances from citizens regarding the escalating cost of such items.
Saif al Zaabi, a father of three, attests to the noticeable rise in school supply prices. He notes that this inflation perplexes families and presents a substantial hurdle to budgeting for household essentials and other related expenditures. Al Zaabi's experience exemplifies the problematic situation faced by many parents.
To explain this matter, Said al Harthy, an economic analyst, explains that such price hikes are predictable, as certain retailers capitalise on the opportunity surrounding the back-to-school period. He further indicates that measures are being implemented by consumer protection bodies to curb excessive inflation. Al Harthy emphasises that parents should actively report any instance of price manipulation.
Al Harthy proposes several strategies to alleviate financial pressure. He advises meticulous planning by creating a checklist tailored to each child's age group and educational needs. This list forms the basis for a calculated budget. He also encourages parents to explore online resources to check general price ranges and to visit multiple stores to compare variations. Discount stores, he adds, offer a viable option for families on a tighter budget.
Moreover, Al Harthy underscores the importance of compiling a comprehensive list of essential items before embarking on shopping trips to counter the impact of advertising tactics that might coax unnecessary purchases. The pivotal principle is to purchase judiciously, focusing on necessities that align with financial capacities.
Al Harthy cautions against succumbing to societal pressure to keep pace with others, as such behaviour can be financially unsustainable.
