SALALAH: Three UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Dhofar Governorate have received over 53,000 visitors so far this year, with arrivals seeing a steady uptick during the current khareef season.
The most popular of these is Al Baleed Archaeological Park, which pulled in a total of 30,181 visitors. The site is an ancient city that was once a major centre for the frankincense trade.
The second big attraction is Khor Rori, also known as the Samharam Archaeological Park, with 15,820 visitors. The park is home to a number of ancient tombs and shrines.
In third place is the desert site of Ubar, located at the entrance to the Empty Quarter. The location, which has attracted 7,326 visitors so far, is of interest to archaeologists due to its potential to shed light on the early history of the region.
In comparison, the three sites in questions drew around 38,000 visitors over the corresponding period of 2022, underscoring the growing popularity of Oman as a tourist destination.
