Ras al Hadd and Ras al Jinz are two beaches that have made their mark as turtle beaches where watching the turtles nest, make their pit, lay legs and watching the hatchlings emerge have become tourists delight.

This week Taqah has come into the spotlight.

A flotilla of baby turtles surprised a group of people in Taqah as they made their way which they thought was the right direction.

A bale of 50 hatchlings got lost on the beach of the Wilayat of Taqah after they lost their way from their nesting sites because of the artificial lights.

That is when seven young men saw them and reported them to the Environmental Control and Emergency Department. They soon started the process of returning them to the beach.

Currently, the hatchlings must already be on their first swim and have begun their first journey safely thanks to the seven thoughtful young men.

The Environment Authority has thanked them and sent out appreciation to everyone who contributes to preserving wildlife.

There are four main sites that have been popular destinations for turtles and they are Ras al Jinz (The Turtle Reserve), Ras al Hadd, Masirah Island and Al Daymaniyat Islands. The turtles that nest in Oman are Green Turtle, Loggerhead Turtle, Hawksbill Turtle and the Oliver Turtle. The most common turtles found in all the places, the beaches and the islands are the green turtles. The baby turtles hatch and work their way up through the sand on their own and are known to follow the light of the moon. But other lights at night can confuse them with their direction.
