Muscat: The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MTCIT) said clarified social media reports about violations by owners of taxis and small freight vehicles (pickup).
MTCIT said its inspectors do not fine small freight vehicles (pick-ups) with a private number plate and are used for personal purposes. Fines are imposed only if these vehicles are used for commercial activities.
Regarding taxis; the ministry said that it is necessary that the taxi operator is licensed ( a permit holder) as per the executive regulations of the Land Transport Law issued by Ministerial Resolution 2/218.
Article 37 states that one of the requirements for operating taxis by individuals is that the driver must be the owner and Article 38 prohibits the licensed individual from allowing others to carry out the activity on his behalf.
