The Oman Olympic Committee (OOC), headed by Khalid bin Mohammed al Zubair, has approved Oman’s participation in seven categories at the 19th Asian Games in China.
Oman will take part in athletics, weightlifting, sailing, shooting, hockey, beach volleyball and swimming at the Asian Games scheduled from September 23 to October 8 in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China.
The OOC board of directors under the chairmanship of Khalid al Zubair met on Tuesday at the OOC headquarters to approve the disciplines in which the country will take part at the Games.
Omani Olympians sprinter Barakat al Harthy, swimmer Issa al Adawi, lady sprinter Mazoon al Alawi, shooter Hamad al Khatiri and weightlifter Amer al Khanjari are all expected to feature in the Oman squad for the Asian Games.
During the last Asian Games, Oman had took part in eight disciplines. Tennis was not included in the latest edition of Asian Games by the OOC.
The country did not win any medal in the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia which marked Oman’s 10th appearance in the continental sports event.
Oman competed with 46 athletes in the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang, Indonesia.
Till now, Oman have a lone gold and three bronze medals to their kitty in the Asian Games.
Mohammed al Malki created history when he became the first Omani to claim a gold in Asian Games when he achieved the feat in the men’s 400m race in Beijing Games in 1990. In the previous edition in Seoul 1986, Al Malki bagged a bronze medal in the same category.
In 1998 Bangkok Games, Oman’s men’s 4x100m relay team won the bronze medal.
Omani sprint sensation Barakat al Harthy rose to fame when he clinched the bronze in men’s 100m at the 2010 Guangzhou Games in China.
