Research team identifies space launch sites in Oman

Muscat: A research team has identified optimal locations for space launch platforms in Oman, marking a significant milestone in Oman’s journey toward advancing its presence in the space industry and promoting peaceful space exploration.


The Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation honored the talented for the study, which was conducted in collaboration with Oman’s Global Space and Technology Company.


Over the course of 18 months, the team diligently analyzed various geographical, climatic, and technological factors to pinpoint the most suitable sites for commercial space launch platforms.


The event was presided over by Dr. Rahma bint Ibrahim al Mahrouqiyah, Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, in the presence of Major General Hamed bin Ahmed Sukron, President of the Academy of Strategic and Defence Studies, and Dr Munther bin Hilal al Busaidy, Deputy Head of the Follow-up Unit for Implementing Oman Vision 2040.


Bahiya bint Hilal al Shuaybiyah, Founder and CEO of the Global Space and Technology Company, expressed her company’s unwavering commitment to contributing to Oman’s space sector.


She emphasized that the space industry represents a promising and critical sector, leveraging Oman’s strategic geographical location and diverse investment opportunities.


The establishment of space launch platforms for commercial purposes is envisioned to serve as a national project that nurtures a new generation of talented Omani youth, fostering expertise in the space domain and its allied fields. Sultan bin Salem al Yahyai, the head of the research team, shared his insights in an interview with Oman Daily Observer, emphasizing that the primary goal of the project was to pinpoint the most suitable location for a rocket launch platform. He highlighted the team’s remarkable achievements in navigating the complexities of establishing a scientific foundation for site selection, factoring in multiple scientific criteria. Al Yahyai acknowledged the unique challenge presented by Oman’s diverse terrains, underscoring the team’s unwavering commitment to striking a delicate balance between technical and scientific excellence while ensuring comprehensive regional development coverage. At the end of the event, Dr Rahma and Bahiya, presented tokens of appreciation to the 24 participants for their invaluable contributions to the research study.
