From this week for a month, the woman of my house is on a mission to visit her folks miles away from Oman.
Whenever she travels, I always have this fear in me of being home alone, and my mind is completely disorganised because I know that without her in the house, it is never easy.
However, I take it as a challenge, but many questions come to mind which often have no answers.
These questions include: Who is going to take care of the laundry? Who is going to wash the dishes? Who is going to iron the clothes or put them into the washing machine? Who is going to manage the kitchen? In general, who is going to take care of the house chores?
Even though she had made all the necessary arrangements for me to be as comfortable as possible, with every item well arranged, placed, and easy to reach in case I need to make a meal, it looks like she will find them in the same order as she left.
I do not think I will want to cook something for myself. I have to confess that I am always too lazy to do such things.
Therefore, in order to avoid all the inconveniences of preparing myself a meal while I am at home until she comes back, I have decided to go on a self-forced diet to lose some weight.
One of my goals during this period is to be aware of my actions and choices of what to eat. Most times, I do not give too much thought to what I eat. However, I am sure this month will help me live healthier.
On the other hand, being home alone could be advantageous because you might enjoy some freedom.
During this period, you at least get rid of abrupt outbursts like those days when she has tough days at home with the kids and with the housework.
Now that she is away, I get to release my stress in a quiet and cool environment after work. I just let the air conditioner on and let the feeling of coolness enshroud the place.
However, this good feeling only lasts for a few minutes. As soon as I remember that I am alone, my own home becomes a place of insecurity and anxiety especially when I start thinking about things that both of us share like that favourite delicious type of food.
Now, getting back to the real point—eating healthy—I emphasise that eating heavy meals and fried items can cause health complications. We need to stop overeating and watch what we eat.
During my interaction with health experts, they told me people should avoid spicy and non-vegetarian foods. They say such foods make you feel fatigued and should be avoided.
There is also a need to avoid cold water. Cold water further increases thirst; it does not quench it. On what to avoid, all health experts advise against soft drinks. Have natural juices instead.
But another big question is, ‘who will monitor my diet plan?’ In the past, whenever I was on the so-called ‘good eating habits plan’, the lady of my house is always there to help me achieve results.
No matter how much you have in the house, you need someone to be critical of everything that you do. In this regard, time will tell.
