MUSCAT: The Royal Cavalry snatched the team title of the first day of the tent pegging Championship while the Royal Guard of Oman's Rashid bin Hamad al Sawai, was bagged the individual title.
The championship was organised by the Oman Equestrian Federation (OEF), as part of the Khareef Dhofar activities for 2023 in association with the Dhofar Equestrian Committee, the Dhofar Governor’s Office, and Dhofar Municipality and sponsored by Hala FM.
The first day's competitions consisted of seven spear rounds for individuals and teams of various stake sizes, where 10 teams from various government cavalry units and private stables competed.
Team competition
The winning Royal Cavalry team consisted of Hamad bin Nasser al Riyami, Safwan bin Zaid al Maamari, Hamad bin Saif al Raisi, and Saif al Ashkhari.
The runners-up Royal Guard of Oman team was represented by Rashid bin Hamad al Sawai, Yahya bin Masoud al Abawi, Dhafer al Zaabi and Ali al Rahbi.
Badr al Qasabi, Khaled al Amri, Omar al Mazrouei and Nasser al Siyabi represented the third placed Sultan's Armed Forces team
Individual Competition
Rashid bin Hamad al Sawai from Royal Guard of Oman grabbed the first place in the individual category followed by Omar al Mazrouei of Sultan's Armed Forces ranked and Safwan bin Zaid al Maamari of Royal Cavalry.
The tent pegging tournament also included a show of archery skill on the horse back thrilled the spectators. The show is now a popular item in many GCC countries.
Ahmed bin Saif al Abri, Secretary-General of OEF, gave prizes to winners in the presence of Dr Youssef al Wahaibi, Treasurer and Acting Executive Director, Mohammed al Balushi, member of the OEF Board.
The tent pegging competitions will continue on Tuesday with spear, pommel and lemon.
Meanwhile, the national tent pegging team will host a training camp, from August 2 to 15, ahead of the world cup tournament in South Africa.
