Muscat: Mwasalat said that 1,900,000 passengers used its bus services of which 33.72 percent were Omani passengers while 111,000 passengers used ferry services (80.09 percent Omanis) in the first six months of this year.
It may be noted that 1.3 million passengers used buses and 103,000 passengers used ferries during the same period in 2022.
Over 10,000 passengers used the buses on daily buses while over 600 passengers used the ferry services.
The company transferred 29,200 vehicles (ferry services) and 10,500 tonnes of cargo during the same period.
Mwasalat currently has an Omanisation percentage of 93 percent.
According to experts, the expansion of public transport is essential if the Sultanate has to join the fight against pollution, climate change, global warming, and rising sea levels.
According to the official estimates, the transport sector emits 15.9Mt of carbon each year, or 18 percent of Oman’s emissions in 2021.
Passenger cars make up 60 percent of this total (1.3 million and cars account for 87 percent of the transport fleet).
Emissions are expected to grow by 41 percent by 2050 under a business-as-usual scenario, driven by population growth.
The pathway to net zero involves full electrification of light vehicles and short-distance heavy vehicles and a transition to hydrogen fuel cells for long-distance heavy vehicles.
