Salalah: Under the theme "Enhancing Medicinal Plant Development for Improved Treatments," Dhofar University is all set to host the second international forum on frankincense from September 3 to 4. The prestigious event will witness the participation of esteemed scientists, academics, and researchers hailing from universities and institutes across more than 13 countries. Distinguished specialists from governmental agencies and various Omani universities will also be in attendance, making it a truly collaborative and diverse gathering.

The forum's second edition is in perfect alignment with Oman's forward-looking vision for 2040, especially regarding the advancement of research and studies related to biodiversity. A primary focus will be on exploring ways to harness the potential of diverse sources of biodiversity, such as medicinal plants, to develop essential products like health supplements, plant-based medicines, cosmetics, and more. Additionally, the event will delve into the utilisation of other biodiversity sources, including fungi, beneficial bacteria, algae, and coral reefs.

At the core of this forum lies the goal of driving research and development in the frankincense industry and medicinal plants. The exchange of knowledge between academia and industry will play a vital role in connecting various scientific and innovative domains, spanning biology, chemistry, biotechnology, medical sciences, and the health industry. This international platform will further foster cooperation, with a special emphasis on traditional herbal medicine and biomedicine.

Prof Dr Louay Rashan, Vice President of the Forum, Chairman of the Preparatory Committee, and Director of the Research Centre at Dhofar University, highlighted the university's profound interest in advancing scientific research and innovation in the field of frankincense. Dhofar Governorate boasts a rich historical legacy in plant biodiversity, including five species of frankincense, which makes it a natural hub for research and development in dietary supplements and cosmetics synthesis.

With such a prestigious lineup of experts and a strong commitment to research and innovation, the second international forum on frankincense promises to be a significant milestone in the journey towards enhancing medicinal plant treatments and their applications in various industries.
