Oman athletes delivery outstanding show in Arab Sports Games

MUSCAT: Oman’s sport teams delivered an outstanding performance in the Arabian Sports Games in Algeria, which concluded on Saturday on a bright note. The national athletes managed to earn 14 medals, including seven medals for the athletics team, while five medals captured by Oman Sail team and two medals from weightlifting team.


Oman placed in the 12th place in the overall order while the hosts Algeria topped the medals tally with 253 medals including 105 gold medals. Tunisia placed as runners up with 121 medals while Morocco finished in third with 84 medals.


The Oman national athletics team bagged the maximum number of medals as they won six medals including two gold, one silver and three bronze medals. The first registered medal for Oman in the Arabian Games was by Fatik Abdulghafoor, who had claimed the first gold in the Men’s high jump competition after he registered a jump with a mark of 2.16 meters.



Paralympics star Qusai al Rawahi recorded a new accomplishment as he won the silver medal in the Men’s 100 meters in the T12/13 category, when he cleared the distance in a timing of 11 seconds and 83 parts of seconds. Oman’s top sprinter Barakat al Harthy clinched the bronze medal in the men’s 100 meter finals as he clocked a timing of 10:37 seconds ( 10 seconds and 37 points of seconds). Oman’s long jumper Salim al Yarubi took the bronze after he registered a jump with a remark of 15.41 meter. Oman’s relay team in 4*100 meter comprised from Rashid al Asmi, Barakat al Harthi, Ali al Balushi and Mohammed al Saadi clinched the gold medal in the competition after they registered a timing of 39 seconds and 70 points of seconds. Oman’s youngster sprinter Mohammed al Saadi clinched silver medal in the Men’s 200 meter finals as he cleared the distance in a timing of 20.94 seconds.


Oman Sailing team earned five medals including two gold, two silver and one bronze medal. The won gold medal was in teams category for Optimist class as the sailor Tamim bin Suleiman al Balushi won the gold while Hassan bin Nasser al Wahaibi got the silver medal. The Sailor Firas bin Haitham al Nabhani won the bronze medal in the same catgroey of the competition. The Oman sail team members continued their excel as the sailor Hatim al Oraimi bagged the silver medal in ILCA4 class competition.


Weightlifter Amur al Khanjari capped off an excellent show as he clinched gold medal and bronze medals in an exciting clean and jerk session of 89kg category. Weightlifter Ilyas al Busaidi was very close to capture bronze medal as he ended in the forth position of in the 73 kg category.
