The astounding beauty of nature, exorbitantly amplified by the drizzling rains of khareef in Dhofar, is truly a respite from the blazing summer heat.
But, the perpetual rains lead to dampness, odours, and also the growth of mold in the indoor spaces. As a result of feeble sunlight or no sunlight at all for days, it gets paramount to take care of indoor settings to prevent them from becoming breeding grounds for various health problems.
Subsequently, due to persistent drizzle, there is suspended mist in the air, which acts as an irritant and leads to various respiratory issues.
Allergic cough, cold, nasal stuffiness, asthma, sinusitis and throat irritation are the chief issues that are a result of a misty and foggy environment.
According to a study published in the National Library of Medicine, "There is sufficient evidence of an association between exposure to a damp indoor environment and upper respiratory tract symptoms."
When cold and moisture-laden air comes in contact with cold and absorbent surfaces like walls, wooden furnishings, upholstery and carpets, it soaks the water content and harbours the growth of mold on them. Henceforth, wooden furniture, closets, kitchen cabinets and wooden kitchenware are the chosen spots where molds find their way to grow and, if left unchecked or untreated, may lead to various skin infections.
Moreover, the high humidity content also leads to joint pain, fatigue, exhaustion, muscle cramps as well as eye irritation. Moreover, the presence of mold can also trigger various fungal infections of the skin, such as dermatitis and allergies.
To take care of the khareef dampness, dehumidifying the homes and indoor settings is a must. One can use dehumidifiers for the same or burn frankincense resin. Frankincense has been known for its air-purifying and anti-microbial properties. It wards off the musty smells and keeps the indoors fragrant.
Air conditioners also act as dehumidifiers as they tend to exhaust the moisture from the spaces. It is beneficial to turn on the AC and open the closets so that the air is well-ventilated and free of dampness to check the mold growth inside the closets.
While using wooden kitchenware, make sure it is clean and mold-free.
When venturing outside, put on the full sleeves outfits and shoes to prevent insect bites. It is even better to put on a repellent before stepping into the valleys. If you are planning a daycation into the lush green wadis, do carry your little frankincense burner to keep those uninvited bugs from ruining your day and taking away an insect rash back home.
With these tips, go on and enjoy a smooth and splendid khareef.
