The Khareef season in the Dhofar Governorate is one of the most exceptional seasons around the world due to its exceptional weather. With mild weather and a charming green nature, flowing water, the precipitation of mist, and the spread of thick fog over the mountains, Dhofar attracts many visitors from all over the world.
Each year, domestic tourism surges during this enchanting season, attracting visitors primarily by land vehicles from across Oman, as well as neighbouring Gulf countries and international travellers. However, due to the surge in traffic, Dhofar is expected to experience congestion, leading to delays, especially at the Khor Rori Bridge, where vehicles from mountainous regions and nearby states converge at the Darbat intersection, causing a temporary standstill for up to forty minutes sometimes.
Qasim al Maashani, hailing from Dhofar Governorate, highlights the lack of parking facilities at popular tourist destinations as one of the key factors contributing to traffic congestion. "As a result, visitors often resort to stopping on the roadside, exacerbating the congestion issue," he said.
Addressing these challenges, Dhofar Municipality has undertaken substantial efforts to enhance various tourist sites for the season. Among the notable developments, the restoration of the Al Haffa area and the establishment of the 'Return of the Past' site stand out. The area will feature a heritage market, restaurants, an art area and numerous other amenities, providing visitors with an immersive experience.
Moreover, a myriad of activities awaits visitors at Wadi Darbat, including kayaking and rowing boats. Awqad Public Park and Ateen Square will host a series of events, such as the 'Kiddy Time' event in Awqad Park and the captivating "Lights Park" event in Salalah Park. Additionally, the introduction of Darbat huts will offer an enchanting view of Wadi Darbat.
This year's season demonstrates the government's commitment to diversifying activities and events, distributing them across different regions, and incorporating innovative ideas that cater to all age groups, aligning perfectly with the dynamic trends and advancements of the present era.
These remarkable additions are expected to significantly attract tourists, particularly families, to Salalah this year. Consequently, it becomes imperative to develop a comprehensive city plan for Salalah that accommodates the growing tourism activity and population surge, particularly during the summer season. The authorities must prioritise traffic management and implement a well-thought-out plan to alleviate congestion effectively.
