Muscat: As Omani Hajis return home from a grueling but soul fulfilling pilgrimage, families in some wilayats are decorating homes and offering them coffee and dates to welcome them. This practice is a testament to the deep-rooted values of solidarity, love, respect, brotherhood within the Omani community.

One of the most prominent customs in the Wilayat of Shinas is festooning houses with palm fronds, symbolising the reception of pilgrims. To further signify their warm welcome, families raise green flags, signifying the arrival of pilgrims in their homes.

The celebrations also include the 'Nathira' gathering, where families, relatives, and friends come together to celebrate the pilgrims' homecoming. Traditional delicacies, nuts, sweets, and coins are mixed in a bowl and showered scattered on the pilgrims upon their arrival, accompanied by lavish feasts and chants.

Aisha al Raisi, a resident of Shinas, said that the custom of receiving pilgrims is deeply ingrained in the country's various governorates. She highlighted that this practice not only makes the pilgrims feel the weight of their sacred duty but also brings joy and pleasure to themselves. Furthermore, it serves as an encouragement for young men and women to embark on the Haj pilgrimage.

Al Raisi added that this unique atmosphere is created with palm fronds and sometimes complemented by ornamental lighting. The highlight is the inscription of phrases such as 'An accepted pilgrimage, a grateful endeavour, and a forgiven sin.'

Families also meticulously clean their homes and stock up on coffee, which is traditionally served with dates to well-wishers. Additionally, they present traditional gifts brought by the pilgrims from the Holy Land such as prayer rugs, rosary beads and incense.

It is customary for at least one family member to greet the pilgrims at their final stop on the journey and accompany them home, completing the joyous reunion.
