Muscat, June 19
The Oman national U23 team was eliminated from the semi-finals of forth edition of the National Al Watani Earthlink WAFF U23 championship, after losing to the host Iraqi team, with a score of 1-0, in the match that took place on Sunday at Al Madinah International Stadium in the Iraq capital, Baghdad, in the presence of a large crowd.
Both teams exhibited caution throughout the majority of the first half, resulting in a goalless stalemate. However, the intensity escalated towards the end of the first half, with noteworthy attempts by both sides. Iraqi striker Hussein Abdullah Lawandi's powerful header was brilliantly saved by Omani goalkeeper Mazen Ziyad, while Omani player Eid al Mukhaini's forceful shot was narrowly denied by Iraqi goalkeeper Kamil Saad. The Omani team's defence also prevented a potential goal by Loundy, showcasing their resilience. The first half concluded without any goals scored.
At the commencement of the second half, the Iraqi coach, Radhi Shneishel, implemented an offensive change by substituting winger Ali al Musawi for Muntazer Abdulamir, aiming to enhance their attacking capabilities. The tactical adjustment paid off as the Iraqi team broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute. A mistake by Omani defender Nasser al Rawahi while clearing Muntazer Mohammed's corner led to an own goal, putting the ball into the roof of Oman's net. Following Iraq's lead, the Omani team launched several successive attacks in an attempt to equalise the score, but the resilient Iraqi defence managed to protect their net.
During the last minutes of the match, substitute Zidan Abduljabbar made an attempt to secure a second goal for Iraq; however, his shot narrowly missed the left post. The game concluded with a victory for the Iraqi team, with a final score of 1-0.
As a result of this triumph, the Iraqi team secures their spot in the final of the West Asian Championship under 23 years, where they will face Irani. The Iranian team advanced to the final after defeating Jordan in a penalty shootout.
