Muscat: Undertaking the Haj pilgrimage requires careful attention to one’s health and well-being due to its physically demanding nature.

While prioritising health preparations is essential to ensure a safe and fulfilling experience, it is crucial to consult with a healthcare professional before the journey to assess overall health, discuss any existing medical conditions, receive guidance on vaccinations, obtain prescribed medications for common ailments and receive tailored health advice.

Dr Saleh al Hinai highlighted the significance of certain medications and pharmaceutical products to address common illnesses during Haj, including Higeen, Travacort, Voltaren, Bonjela, Buscopan, Dompy, Olfen, Duphalac, Luqman oil, Panadol, sunscreen cream, and tablets like Primolut N for delaying the menstrual cycle.

He explained that Primolut N is taken as one tablet (5mg) three times a day, starting three days before the expected date of the menstrual cycle, for a maximum duration of 14 days. Menstruation usually resumes 2-3 days after discontinuing the medication.

“It is crucial to ensure an adequate supply of medications for the pilgrimage, carrying them in the carry-on bag to prevent loss. Keeping medications in their original packaging and having a prescription or doctor’s note for controlled substances is essential,” he indicated.

Dehydration is a significant risk during Haj due to physical exertion and hot weather. Staying hydrated by drinking ample water and electrolyte-rich fluids is crucial.

While carrying a refillable water bottle ensures access to clean drinking water at all times, protecting oneself from sunburn and heatstroke is vital.

Wearing a wide-brimmed hat, using an umbrella for shade, and applying high SPF sunscreen to exposed skin offer protection.

Haj involves long walks, physical exertion, and a busy schedule. It is important to listen to one’s body, pace oneself, take breaks, rest when needed, and ensure sufficient sleep each night to recharge and maintain energy levels. Prioritising health during

Haj allows for a focus on the spiritual aspects of the pilgrimage and ensures a safe and fulfilling journey.
