Muscat - The tropical system that has developed over the Arabian Sea has been keenly watched by meteorologists.
The tropical storm "Biparjoy" situating 1,133 km from the coasts of the Sultanate of Oman has intensified into a category 1 cyclone, the Oman Meteorology Office said on Wednesday.
So how does a storm attain the status of a cyclone?
A tropical depression has wind speeds in the range of 17 to 27 knots, while a trough has a wind speed of fewer than 17 knots at the center.
if the speed exceeds 34, then it is categorized as a tropical storm until 63 knots. lithe speed is between 28 and 33 knots, it is described as a deep depression.
Wind velocity at the center (eye) determines whether or not a tropical system is a cyclone. If the speed is around 64 to 82 knots, then it is called a Category 1 cyclone, according to officials at the National Multi-Hazard Early Warning Centre.
The Category 2 cyclone will have a wind speed of 83 to 95 knots.
Category 3 is a severe tropical cyclone, with 10-minute mean wind speeds (MWS) of 113-136km/h and very destructive winds carrying a maximum three-second gust speed of 165-224km/h.
The Category 4 cyclone will have a wind speed of 137 knots or more.
