MUSCAT, June 6
Oman national football team will head off to Uzbekistan on Friday to take part in the inaugural edition of Central Asian Football Association (Cafa) Nations Cup 2023. The domestic training camp which started on May 29 will conclude on Thursday. More than 14 sessions were conducted towards shaping the players for the central Asian event and the upcoming crucial assignments including also AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023 finals and the qualifiers for Asian teams on road to the Fifa World Cup 2026 as well as the AFC Asian Cup 2027.
At Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex, Red Warriors men continued their daily sessions under watchful eyes of Croatian coach Branko Ivankovic and his technical coaching staff. The training sessions were attended by all the players except Al Mundher al Alawi who left the camp due to an injury while Ahmed al Kaabi trained individually on Monday night. The training programme normally started with warm-up practice in presence of the fitness coach. Later, the players focused on ball training divided into two groups. Then, the players worked on implementing some tactical training, building up and creating attacking attempts towards more focus in the forward area.
The national team will compete against hosts Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan in Group A in the Central Asian Football Association (Cafa) Nations Cup 2023 while Iran, Kyrgyzstan (hosts) and Afghanistan teams comprised Group B. The event is scheduled in Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan during June 10 to 20. The Oman team will utilise from their participation at the Central Asian event by playing some tight matches against the Asian teams from different schools.
Oman will begin their campaign against hosts Uzbekistan on June 11 and then they will take on Tajikistan on June 14 and will conclude their group games against Turkmenistan on June 17.
