MUSCAT, JUNE 3

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by wholly state-owned national energy company Energy Development Oman (EDO) with global tech giant Siemens Energy on Thursday, will seek to leverage R&D to unlock new opportunities as Oman charts an economic future powered by green hydrogen.

The MoU, signed by Eng Mazin bin Rashid al Lamki, Chief Executive Officer of EDO, and Khalid bin Hadi, Managing Director of Siemens Energy, came against the backdrop of landmark agreements inked by Omani authorities with the developers of the first three land blocks earmarked for green hydrogen projects.

In a post over the weekend, Khalid bin Hadi of Siemens Energy, stated: “We at Siemens Energy are proud to expand our collaboration with various partners in Oman. Last week, we signed an MoU with Energy Development Oman, which reflects our innovation commitment and the pursuit of a sustainable energy landscape in alignment with Oman's Vision.

Through this agreement, we aim to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and expertise, which we believe will pave the way for job creation and the empowerment of local talent. We are dedicated to supporting Omanization efforts and nurturing the growth of a skilled workforce within the Sultanate.

By working together with EDO on accelerating R&D in Oman, we can create a sustainable energy future that benefits the economy and the society of the Sultanate,” he added.

Earlier, speaking during the MoU signing, Mazin al Lamki of EDO, underlined the importance of collaboration and knowledge exchange in optimizing value creation from the new hydrogen economy.

“This MoU signifies a new chapter of cooperation between our companies,” the CEO said. “Through this partnership, we will join forces to push the boundaries of green hydrogen technology, foster innovation, and exchange expertise,” he said.

EDO, as the parent company of Hydrom – the orchestrator and master-planner of the nation’s green hydrogen industry, is at the forefront of the energy revolution, the official stressed.

“At EDO, we understand the world is changing. And within our energy mix we recognize the urgent need to transition to cleaner, more sustainable sources of energy. As the parent of Hydrom, we have taken up the responsibility of orchestrating the green hydrogen sector in Oman. And today's event is a testimony to our commitment. By investing in green hydrogen projects, we are investing in a brighter future for Oman,” he noted.

The ground-breaking hydrogen projects signed off by Hydrom “will not only contribute to our national energy security, but will also position us as a regional hub for green hydrogen projects, export and innovation,” said Al Lamki.

“The scale and ambition of these projects are a testament to the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders involved, the government agencies, international partners, and technology providers, along with the investors,” he added.

A global technology powerhouse, Siemens Energy provides equipment and services to the power sector, earning revenues of an estimated 32 billion euros in 2022.
