Omani youngsters who took hospitality as their way forward are finding the HORECA, one of the Middle East’s largest hospitality and food service exhibitions, as a venue to showcase their talents to the world and to hone their skills in various arms of the sector.

What made the event (May 30 to June 1) even dearer to the youth was that it offered a multitude of trial and error sessions, competitions and culinary, bar and hospitality competitions and live cooking demonstrations. "HORECA Oman has been a real testing ground for my knowledge and experience that I gathered from my two years of training at the college and I really enjoyed it," an Omani lady, a second year student of hospitality at National Tourism College (NTC), said.

Organisers said that Oman has proven to be an attractive market for international food and beverage suppliers as the country is heavily reliant on food imports. 80 per cent of its goods come from abroad and international tourism is identified as one of the key priority sectors for investment under its economic development plan Vision 2040.

"The continuous growth of Oman's HORECA industry presents many opportunities and new businesses for international suppliers. We are equally excited to collaborate with HORECA to help Oman open up gateways to the global food and hospitality markets and vice versa," Salim al Hashmi, CEO of Al Nimr Expo, said.

The competitions included Latte Art competition, Giffard Cocktail Zero competition, Bed Making, Housekeeping, Barista, and so on and so forth.

Speaking about the participation of the youth at the event, Joumana Dammous-Salame, managing director of Hospitality Services, said: “We were delighted to bring HORECA to Oman, which is one of the most exciting markets in the region. With the support of our local partner Al Nimr Expo, we are glad that the event marked an important turning point in the country’s food service scene in terms of both business and education."
