MUSCAT: Dr Idris Mia, the Ambassador of the Syrian Arab Republic to the Sultanate of Oman, met with Abdulsalam bin Mohammed al Murshidi, head of the Oman Investment Authority in a bid to explore areas of cooperation that includes bilateral investment and enhancing trade and commercial relations.

During the meeting, they discussed the relations of cooperation between the two sides and ways of upgrading and strengthening them in all fields, in a way that serves the common interests of the two brotherly peoples and countries.

“We are happy to have met with the head of Oman Investment Authority seeking more ways of enhancing bilateral investment relations and we sincerely hope that we will explore better ways," said Dr Mia.

Recently, Syria has made attempts to invite Omani businessmen wishing to invest in the Syrian Arab Republic offering visas from the border posts upon their arrival at the borders, after submitting the necessary documents in those centers.

Any investor from the Sultanate of Oman can get a visit or multiple entry visa to Syria based on their document submission and purpose of visit and they are free to make any investments there. With this aim, the two countries have formed the Syrian-Omani Business Council last year.

“We are working with the Sultanate to develop bilateral economic relations, and in this regard, we have formed the Syrian-Omani Business council at the initiative of Mohammad Samer al Khalil, Syrian Minister of Economy and Foreign Trade," he further added.

The establishment of the council aims to enhance the role of the private sector and benefit from its capabilities in developing economic relations between Syria and the sultanate in trade, investment, industry, agriculture and tourism.

Syria had earlier expressed its willingness to expand cooperation with Oman in the industrial sector by attracting new investments, especially in cement manufacturing as Syria needed it for its reconstruction phase at the 4th Cement Conference 2022 held in Damascus and underlined the necessity of the two sides bolstering industrial and commercial cooperation and export of industrial products produced by small enterprises in Syria to Oman.

On the Omani side, the meeting was attended by Suleiman al Hasani, Director of International Cooperation at the Oman Investment Authority, and from the Embassy side, the attaché, Samer Bakour.
