The Consumer Protection Authority (CPA) launched an online version of its consumables price list on Monday.
The database, known as the 'Price Observatory', contains information of more than 750,000 food items and luxuries in 21 commercial outlets in the Muscat Governorate.
Chairman of the Consumer Protection Authority, Sulayem Ali Sulayem al Hakmani, explained that the "Price Observatory" is expected to facilitate consumer shopping by comparing goods offered in several trading centres.
He added that the CPA is currently working on expanding the number of commercial outlets in the database in Muscat Governorate, which will later extend to all Governorates in the country.
By digitising the database, the Authority seeks to prevent fraud and instances of price hiking in the market.
Earlier last week, CPA reaffirmed its commitment to regulating and monitoring any cases of abuses or breaches in the market during the month of Ramadhan. In addition to verifying the legitimacy of promotional offers in the market.
The authority also launched a Ramadhan food basket for families in need in 11 commercial centres in the country.
‘The Ramadan Family Pack includes several essential food items and is priced between RO 9.500 and RO 10.500. The objective of the food basket is to ensure fast and safe shopping for both locals and residents,’ noted the Authority in a statement.
‘The food basket was launched before the advent of the holy month of Ramadhan so that all consumers, affected families, people with low income and charitable societies benefit from it,’ it added.
